Volunteer
The event relies on volunteers to serve as both Judges and Moderators.
- Judges evaluate team arguments by asking questions and providing scores
- Moderators use a provided script to guide the session and keep everyone on schedule
Volunteers don’t need any background in philosophy or ethics, just curiosity and a willingness to listen closely. We welcome Iowa State students, faculty, staff, and community members alike. All volunteers complete a background check and a brief training webinar, in compliance with Iowa State risk standards.
Volunteers receive everything they need to feel confident in their role. Moderators get a step-by-step script, judges get clear scoring criteria and guidance, and everyone has access to sample videos. All materials are available online, so volunteers can prepare at their own pace.
It’s a full day competition, but you only need to commit to one hour. If you have more time to give, you’re welcome to stay for a half day or the full day. Lunch is provided.
